Delhi6 - The tastiest curry on the moon?

Travelling East for the first time, The OCC chose Delhi6 to review. Partly because we had heard good things about the food, but also because we were intrigued to experience this unconventional location. Situated in the basement of a mall connected to Hotel Katong, you could be excused for walking straight past this quite small, unassuming purveyor of spice. If you are a follower of our reviews you will by now know that atmosphere is an important part of our review process so we felt it important to visit a good cross section of the kind of restaurants you will find in Singapore.
Atmosphere scored lowest overall with a quite flaccid 6.2 partly due to the location but also due to the small size of Delhi6. As a party of 9 the OCC took centre stage with the few remaining tables delicately placed around us. We are quite a rowdy bunch once the Kingfishers get flowing (served icy cold and quite promptly btw) but in such a small venue there is a danger of feeling like you are eating your meal in silence. One of the trialists of the evening Ben ‘Hodor’ Dyas likened it to the Curry house on the moon…Great food, very little atmosphere (BOOM BOOM).
When you run a small restaurant you are obviously limited to the number of tables you can sit. But rather than see this as a negative we feel managers should see this as an opportunity to offer great customer care and service. Fewer patrons = more love to share right? Unfortunately this was only partially true in Delhi6’s case. The service was decent. We ordered a lot of dishes and were sinking the Kingfishers like they came directly from the teat of Mama Yashin herself. The waiting staffs were able to accommodate us without any prolonged delays or dips in the evening. Customer care however was a slightly different story. As a party of 9 we booked in advance and made it clear we were coming in to review the restaurant. We were a little disappointed with the lack of fuss made of us and we sat down feeling a little unloved. As one member put it, “I expected better customer care considering our group basically filled the whole restaurant.”
In terms of the quality of the food Delhi6 does not disappoint. Scoring a commendable 7.89 the OCC thoroughly enjoyed the variety, presentation and taste of the dishes on offer. A sample of some of the feedback given by OCC members
“Weird location but really top notch food”. “The best fish curry I have had in 2018” (please note this fish curry was actually consumed in 2019 soooooo??). “Food was well presented”.
The portions in Delhi6 are quite small and the OCC are renowned gluttons. As a result we ordered A LOT of dishes, too many to list here but most noteworthy (from my dwindling memory Mr Chairman) was the fish tikka, tandoori murg and all of the kebab starters. The Rogan Josh, Daal and Biriyani were all very good and were accompanied with fresh roti’s and naans. Everything that came out was bright, colourful and really well presented.
Kingfishers are S$8 a bottle. The starters average about S$11 each and the mains around S$15. Not the cheapest curry in Singapore but we feel this represents fair value for the food and experience. A meal suitable for the Mayor of Oakham himself perhaps??
To summarise, you will get a very good meal at Delhi6 and the serving staff will look after you. This is a great venue for a tasty meal but perhaps not your first choice if you want to let your hair down on a Friday night…although we all did (with the exception of VC Billy of course)
