Uncle Desi is OCC recommended

This was another first – a pop up restaurant in honour of the OCC. To be clear – Uncle Desi is not a restaurant, not does it want one. It is a top quality take away service operated by our friends at the Black Sheep group for the people of Hong Kong – howevere on this occasion, they rolled out the stops and put on pop up restaurant at a secret location so that we could enjoy together – and boy did they smash it!

The menu takes inspiration from your favourite Indian takeaway when you were growing up. They aim to be your local go-to that you ordered as a treat when your mum could not be bothered cooking. The one where they knew your order as soon as you walked in, the one where you always intentionally over-ordered because the leftovers on Sunday were almost better than when it was hot on Saturday night. And they deliver this with style and with humour.

We were greeted with hand written musical Uncle Desi Christmas cards – which got the evening off to a fantastic start. The food was served in its regular take away packaging, to emphasise the point – high quality and well branded.

The crispy poppadums, alloo samosas and onion pakoras all hit the spot. Both the chicken and fish tikka were everything you would hope for, nicely building the excitement ready for the “secret pots of wonder” aka the main courses….which were yet another home run. The butter chicken, lam rogan josh and prawn masala were all hits, as was the vindaloo – a little additional treat for the OCC boys which is not on their regular menu.

A wonderful night, with amazing care taken to make the evening very special. If you haven’t yet ordered from Uncle Desi… you really should. And if you have already ordered… order again!
